Charity

Why Charity?

Freemasonry is one of the largest fraternal and charitable organisations in the UK. As explained on our “What is Freemasonry?” page, Freemasonry is founded on three key principles, one of which is “Relief”. Whilst this has a wider meaning of being of service to others, particularly those less fortunate, “Relief” encompasses Freemasonry’s charitable activities. It should be remembered that charitable giving includes not just the giving of money, which often tends to be our first thought, but also the giving of time and other resources.

The Masonic Charitable Foundation

Through the Masonic Charitable Foundation, Freemasonry donates larger sums of money to national organisations working in areas such as medical research, vulnerable people, youth opportunities, air ambulances, hospices, disaster and emergency relief and many more besides.

Marmion Lodge

Marmion Lodge, as well as contributing to the work of the Masonic Charitable Foundation, has a long tradition of making charitable donations to both national and local organisations. Similarly, many of its members have been benefactors to the town of Tamworth in their own right. For example, not many people know that local philanthropist William MacGregor (1848 – 1937) was a Freemason and Worshipful Master of Marmion Lodge in 1898 or that fourteen other past Masters of the Lodge have served as Mayor of Tamworth!

Marmion Lodge is proud to have supported the following local and national organisations in recent years:
